Fireside Chat

This week’s edition of Fireside Chat was produced on the west coast in Los Angeles, Calif. during GRAMMY week. President LaForge attended to support students and faculty at Mississippi Night at the GRAMMY’s with the Delta Music Institute and finalize details regarding the Education Affiliate program opportunity that Delta State has been offered through the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi.

To provide a bit of background information, in February 2013, Delta State signed a 99-year lease agreement with the Cleveland Music Foundation designating the property site for the construction of the museum. It is located right next door to Delta State’s Hugh Ellis Walker Alumni-Foundation House. Construction ground was broken in June 2013, and it is scheduled to open this fall.

GRAMMY Museum Mississippi will be a 20,000 plus square foot facility and will showcase Mississippi’s influence in American music through interactive exhibits. A student exchange program will provide the opportunity for our students to work with peers at colleges and universities in Los Angeles while earning college credit. Delta State is an official GRAMMY Museum university affiliate and will have access to GRAMMY Museum content as a resource for educational purposes and programs.

Delta Music Institute Director Tricia Walker and student Jessica Faith join LaForge on the segment. Faith shares how the DMI students prepared for this trip, and Walker speaks about how opportunities like the L.A. trip enhance the entertainment industry degree program at Delta State. She also shares how experiences like Mississippi Night compliment GRAMMY® Museum Mississippi.

LaForge thanks Faith and Walker and announces that the Career Services’ Statesmen Connect program is hosting a campus wide career fair with various employers from around the state. That event is open to all majors and will be held in the Union State Room from 1 – 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Also, the Delta State basketball teams play the University of Alabama in Huntsville this Thursday evening in the Coliseum.
