Joining President LaForge is Juwan Burney, a star player for the Statesman baseball team and the current Gulf South Conference representative for the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Today’s segment comes to you from Indianapolis, Indiana, where President LaForge and other university officials are attending the 2018 NCAA Convention.
Thousands of student-athletes and university representatives from across the nation participated in the convention to discuss best practices, initiatives, and legislation for meeting the needs of student-athletes across all divisions. Workshops cover a wide array of topics, such as promoting inclusion in college sports, supporting student-athlete health and well-being, and much more.
Attendees also had the privilege to hear from NCAA President Mark Emmert for his “State of College Sports Address.”
The focus at the convention is to discuss ways to promote success for our student-athletes, both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
A great example of a student-athlete at Delta State who has succeeded in both arenas is Mr. Juwan Burney, a star player for the stellar Statesman baseball team and the current Gulf South Conference representative for the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, referred to as SAAC.
SAAC serves as the primary governance arm representing student-athlete interests. As the Gulf South Conference representative, Juwan serves as a student-athlete liaison who is responsible for monitoring and discussing issues within conferences and at the national level.
