Alumni and friends will flood campus this weekend for Delta State’s 32nd annual Pig Pickin’. This event has become increasingly popular over the past 30 years and always features a full line up of entertainment, great food, and of course, football. This year, a new event has been added to the schedule the first annual Hog Run 5K. The 5k is sponsored by Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Delta State Office of Student Affairs. Proceeds from the run will be donated to Kappa Sigma’s national philanthropy Military Heroes Campaign which benefits veterans. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 7 at the gazebo in downtown Cleveland.
Beginning this year, Pig Pickin’ is a sanctioned member of the Memphis BBQ Network, an organization providing support for BBQ contests across the region. This new affiliation is expected to bring an even larger number of cook teams to campus for the annual BBQ competition.
In other news on campus, the keynote address for the International Conference on the Blues will take place at GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi today at 9 a.m. with Dr. John Szwed, professor emeritus of music and jazz studies at Columbia University. The conference will continue through Tuesday afternoon with a full slate of entertainment and academic panels. Tuesday night, the Aaron Neville Duo will take the stage at the Bologna Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. For more information on the conference, visit www.deltastate.edu/bluesconference.
