Each year, one Delta State University student is selected to serve as a Congressional Fellow for U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi. The student spends the spring semester in Washington D.C. gaining firsthand experience while working with one of the state’s most respected leaders.
This year, Delta State senior Tyler Sullivan, who also is the quarterback of the Statesmen football team, has been selected for this special honor. Tyler will head to D.C. in January to participate in this program that aims to provide students with a better understanding of the legislative process by serving on Senator Cochran’s staff. The program is sponsored by Delta State in collaboration with the Delta Council and Staplcotn.
Tyler is a graduate of Winston Academy and attended Northwest Mississippi Community College before coming to Delta State. He is majoring in biology and was recently named a finalist for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy, which is presented to the best football scholar-athlete in the country. Tyler was one of only 12 athletes to make the final list and will travel to New York tomorrow, December 6, for the awards ceremony.
In other news on campus, there will be a poetry reading tomorrow at noon by students who are taking creative writing this semester. That event will take place in the Second Floor Lobby of the H.L. Nowell Student Union. Also, it’s exam week, and we wish the best for all of our students as they wrap up this fall semester and get ready to head home for the winter break.
