October is College Application Month, and in conjunction with the statewide College Countdown Mississippi initiative, our Admissions staff is out on the road encouraging high school students to apply for college and to consider Delta State.

College Countdown Mississippi is part of a national effort — the American College Application Campaign — that shares the goal of easing the admissions and enrollment process for students, particularly first-generation and low-income students, and ensure that they apply to at least one postsecondary institution. School districts from across the state have committed to participate in College Countdown Mississippi, including Jackson Public Schools, Delta area districts, districts in the coastal region, and the Meridian Public School District.

Some of the activities planned for students include Application Day, Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Days, and College Signing Day, which is designed to replicate the excitement of athletic signing days. Many of the activities will occur during the school day and will focus on students who might not otherwise apply to college.

In other news on campus, the Miss DSU pageant is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bologna Performing Arts Center. The emcee for the evening will be Dr. Vernell Bennett, vice president of Student Affairs, and tickets to the event are $6 for general admission and $3 for students. On Friday at 7 pm, the Planetarium will host a special Halloween show exploring the stars and cosmos. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children, senior citizens and DSU students, faculty, and staff who have an Okra card. To find out more visit
