Fireside Chat

In this week’s Fireside Chat, President LaForge talks with Joe Turner, a business giant and the first speaker in the President’s Colloquia Distinguished Lecture Series.

One of the President’s goals has been to establish a way to bring top-notch speakers to Delta State to share their knowledge with students and faculty. In September of 2013, Delta State hosted the first Colloquia Distinguished Speakers Lecture Series with former Mississippi Governor William Winter, and the series continues to attracts marquee speakers from across the country.

This week, Joe Turner, the first Colloquia guest of the 2015-16 academic year, shares his knowledge on establishing a successful business venture. Mr. Turner is a business giant, leading a 50-store Wendy’s franchise located in the Southeast. His lecture, “Just the Right Amount of Ketchup…Life Lessons from an Entrepreneur,” took place September 1, and he shared some of the tips he has learned throughout his distinguished career as a businessman and entrepreneur.

The next Colloquia Series event is scheduled for October 22. The speaker will be Dr. Natasha Trethewey, who holds an honor doctorate from Delta State, and was the Poet Laureate of the United States in 2012 and 2013. Her third book of poems, Native Guard, won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in poetry.

Also, a reminder that the International Student Association’s monthly meeting is set for Wednesday (Sept. 23) in the Union second floor lobby. It’s a great way for the international student population to connect with other students and to find out about available resources and activities.
