Director of Athletics, Mike Kinnison

Joining President LaForge is Mike Kinnison, Director of Athletics at Delta State.

For 26 years, Mike Kinnison served as coach of the Statesmen baseball. Coach Kinnison was tapped as the sixth Athletic Director in Delta State’s history in November, taking over for Dr. Ronnie Mayers, and continued to coach the Statesmen in the 2019 season. Earlier this month, he made the decision to move forward with his athletic director responsibilities full-time. Let’s reflect on Coach Kinnison’s illustrious career as the skipper for the DSU baseball program.

  • In his 23 seasons as a head coach, Coach Kinnison guided the Statesmen to the 2004 NCAA Division II national title, six College World Series appearances, six NCAA South/South Central Regional championships, and eight Gulf South Conference titles.
  • In 2004, he earned the ABCA “National Coach of the Year” award after leading the Statesmen to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship.
  • He has also been named the Gulf South Coach of the Year six times and appropriately named “Coach of the Decade” by the GSC in 2010.

Campus Improvement Projects

Joining President LaForge is Jamie Rutledge, vice president for finance and administration and CFO.

Delta State is constantly improving all facets of university life including upgrades and renovations  to our campus. This summer, the Department of Facilities Management is busy tackling many campus improvement projects, and here are some numbers about those projects.

  • The Mississippi Department of Transportation sidewalk project, which will update and repair the sidewalks on campus, will cost $530,000.
  • The H.L. Nowell Student Union will undergo a $2 million renovation to make room for our new food service vendor, Sodexo.
  • Walter Sillers Coliseum will receive a new roof, HVAC system,  and sound system, totaling $2.5 million.

Mike Nienaber, new men’s basketball coach

Joining President LaForge is Mike Nienaber, the 16th head coach of Delta State men’s basketball.

Last month, Delta State announced the addition of Mike Nienaber to our athletic department, as the new head coach of the Statesmen men’s basketball team. Coach Nienaber is one of the NCAA DII’s most successful head coaches. Here are some numbers on the newest member of the DSU Family.

  • Coach Nienaber is the 16th head coach of men’s basketball.
  • His 593 career wins rank 11th among all active NCAA Division II head coaches.
  • In his illustrious 20-year career at Christian Brothers, he amassed a 351-224 record, winning two Gulf South Conference championships and the 2009 South Region championship.
  • He has been awarded the GSC Coach of the Year three times, and he was the recipient of the 2009 National Association of Basketball Coaches South Region Coach of the Year honor.
